The Colorado Medical Society (CMS) is recognized by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) as an accreditor of continuing medical education (CME) providers. CMS is the final authority for the accreditation of intrastate providers of CME in Colorado. Organizations who become accredited and plan CME in accordance with the Essential Areas and Policies of the ACCME and CMS may offer AMA PRA Category 1 Credit to their physician attendees. Eligibility for Accreditation To be eligible to apply for accreditation, an organization must:
*ACCME defines "commercial interest" as: "Any entity producing, marketing, re-selling, or distributing health care goods or services consumed by, or used on, patients." The ACCME does not consider providers of clinical service directly to patients to be commercial interests. Organizations whose overall program of CME consists of attendees representing 30% or more from beyond Colorado and bordering states must seek accreditation directly from the ACCME. Instructions for Initial Applicants The first step in becoming an accredited provider is completion of a "Pre-application for Accreditation." The purpose of the pre-application is to provide us with information necessary to determine if your organization is eligible for CMS accreditation. We ask that you demonstrate to us that you have mechanisms in place to fulfill the Essential Areas and Elements and Accreditation Policies in the CME activities that you will produce. Download the pre-application, which can be found under "Accreditation Materials," complete the fill-in form and e-mail to joanne_wojak@cms.org or print and mail to the Colorado Medical Society, 7351 E Lowry Blvd, Denver, CO 80230, attention: Continuing Medical Education. CMS staff will review the initial application and respond to you within 2 weeks from the date of receipt. Once your pre-application has been approved, you may use the CMS Application for Accreditation as a Provider of Continuing Medical Education, which can be found under "Accreditation Materials" below. If you have any questions please contact the CME office at 720-858-6309. Accredited Providers Seeking Re-Accreditation If you are currently an accredited provider with the CMS and are seeking re-accreditation, you will receive a notice of re-accreditation approximately 15 months prior to your current accreditation term expiration. This notice will be sent by mail to the Chair of the CME committee of record, and copied to the designated CME staff of record via e-mail. The designated staff person will also receive all necessary forms, instructions and due dates for the self-study application and related documents at that time. All application materials are also downloadable from this website. If you have any questions regarding the re-accreditation process, please contact the CME office at 720-858-6309.
