Subject: Using False Identification to Obtain Health Care Services

WHEREAS, healthcare providers of all types,
including physicians and hospitals, are encountering an increasing number of
patients who provide false information upon registration for care. Such false information usually includes
a false address, but often includes a fictitious name as well, and
WHEREAS, certain medical situations may arise in
which follow-up contact with the patient is absolutely critical. In these situations, inability of healthcare providers to contact the patient may place the patient's personal health in jeopardy, and
WHEREAS, medical situations may arise in which
public health may be jeopardized if the subject patient cannot be reached. Examples here would include certain
infectious diseases, and
WHEREAS, healthcare provides have a right to
contact a patient for purposes of seeking compensation for (their) services,
therefore be it
RESOLVED, the House of Delegates of the Colorado Medical Society directs the Council on Legislation to seek sponsor(s) in the Colorado General Assembly to propose legislation as follows: It shall be a criminal act for any person to knowingly provide false personal information, including, but not limited to, legal name and address to a healthcare provider. The Council on Legislation is directed to work with the Colorado Hospital Association, and such other interested parties as the Council may deem appropriate, in this effort.
