WHEREAS, the CMS currently pays AMA and Medical Student Component Society dues for all medical students, and

WHEREAS, this amounts to a total of $20 per student for Medical Student Component Society dues and $68 per student for AMA dues for the entire four years of medical school, and

WHEREAS, relative to the class size (132-144), there is minimal involvement (~20 students) on the regional and national level and at regional and national conferences, and

WHEREAS, the majority of students do not utilize all the opportunities that their AMA membership affords them, including access to these conferences, and

WHEREAS, these conferences give students a chance to learn about the AMA’s system for policy making, a chance to network with fellow students as well as physicians from across the country that they would otherwise not be able to meet, and ultimately give them a chance to voice their opinion and have a hand in the AMA’s policy making, and

WHEREAS, it reflects favorably upon our campus to be represented at these conferences by a strong delegation, and

WHEREAS, many local Colorado physicians have expressed a desire for all Colorado attendees, physicians and students, to stay in the conference hotel as opposed to commuting from other hotels in order to better network and socialize, and

WHEREAS, these conferences can place a substantial financial burden on medical students who wish to attend, and

WHEREAS, maintaining local involvement and membership, while increasing our presence in the regional and national arenas is a high priority, therefore be it

RESOLVED, that the CMS continue to pay for the Medical Student Component Society and the AMA memberships for all incoming students, and be it further

RESOLVED, that CMS create a medical student leadership development fund in the amount of $7,000 per year to support student involvement in state and national physician activities, with emphasis on basic transportation and accommodations at CMS and national physician meetings, and be it further

RESOLVED, that the CMS dues billing statement sent to all members include a checkbox asking for voluntary contributions to the fund.

FISCAL IMPACT: Potential Savings
