Introduced by: Thomas J. Allen, MD
Subject: Prescription Restrictions
Referred to: Reference Committee on Board of Directors/Constitution & Bylaws/Credentials
WHEREAS, many individuals have legitimate needs for controlled drugs which now require a new separate written prescription for each quantity obtained, and
WHEREAS, many insurance companies restrict insureds to one monthÕs supply of a drug at a time, and
WHEREAS, even if more than one monthÕs supply of a controlled drug could be obtained, the existence of such quantities in one patientÕs possession would needlessly create increased risks of diversion of such drugs from their intended purposes, and
WHEREAS, monthly visits and written prescriptions create needless expense and inconvenience to both patients and physicians, therefore be it
RESOLVED, that the Colorado Medical Society seek changes in law and/or regulation liberalizing the manner in which physicians may provide for monthly allocations of controlled drugs to patients with demonstrated need for them without the necessity of a new written prescription for each quantity obtained, and be it further
RESOLVED, that the Colorado Medical Society request that its AMA delegation seek similar changes at the national level.
